Different kinds of performance car

Modifications

Some performance cars have been modified during previous ownership. This can range from simple cosmetic changes to suspension, exhaust, intake or engine-management work.

Where we know a vehicle has meaningful modifications, we will discuss them with the buyer. If standard factory specification is important to you, ask specifically before travelling.

Engine tuning

A remapped or tuned vehicle should not be assumed to produce factory power figures. Likewise, a modified exhaust or intake system does not necessarily mean the engine has been tuned.

Documentation such as tuning invoices, dyno sheets or previous owner records may be available on individual vehicles.

Tyres and brakes

Tyre and brake condition matters particularly on higher-performance cars. Larger wheels, premium tyres and specialist braking components can cost considerably more than those fitted to ordinary hatchbacks.

If you are travelling a long distance for a specific vehicle, ask about tyre condition and recent brake work before setting off.

Cold starts

If you are viewing an older or specialist performance car and want to hear it start from cold, mention this when arranging the visit. Otherwise the car may already have been moved or driven earlier in the day.

Performance-car checklist

Service history Regular servicing matters more when an engine is producing higher output.
Modifications Ask whether the car remains at factory specification.
Tyres Correct tyre type and matching axles are worth checking.
Brakes Performance discs and pads can be significantly more expensive.
Insurance Obtain a quote before committing if premiums are a concern.

Manual or automatic?

Our performance stock includes both. Modern automatics can be extremely quick, while older manual cars often appeal for entirely different reasons.

Manual Usually preferred by buyers who want more involvement and direct control, particularly in smaller performance cars.
Dual-clutch DSG, S tronic and similar transmissions can shift extremely quickly while remaining practical in traffic.
Torque-converter automatic Modern units such as BMW's ZF automatic combine smooth everyday use with rapid shifts when driven harder.

Independent inspection

Customers are welcome to arrange an independent inspection before buying a performance vehicle. This can be particularly useful on older, modified or higher-value cars.
